Navigating the Wheel

2 of 5

Structure and imagery

Our Wheel of Engaged Buddhism is comparatively simple. The image in each of the ten sectors symbolizes a path of engaged/spiritual practice. Click a section to identify its path.

Fields
Modes
Cultivating awareness in daily life   Moving into the world
Embracing family   Extending compassionate action
Working with others   Exploring new terrain
Participating in politics   At ease amid activity
Caring for the Earth   Spreading joy in ten directions

Five of the paths are primarily fields of practice.

The other five paths are primarily modes of practice.

A wheel format makes it possible to envision ten paths simultaneously, give them equal weight, and consider their mutual relatedness. The ten paths are meant to be suggestive rather than exhaustive. Each path is actually an untold number of paths, as individuals and groups in different circumstances find their own way.
